LGBTQ+ EXPERIENCES IN THE US SOUTHEAST

In the united states, more than 1/3 OF THE ADULT LGBTQ+ POPULATION lives in the SOUTHEAST REGION OF THE COUNTRY. Yet, social research on Lgbtq+ life in the us often eclipses, stereotypes, or fails to acknowledge the social import of centering their experiences.

IN this piece of my research program, I WORK WITH an interdisciplinary team of academic researchers and community stakeholders to address this gap.

TRANSNORMATIVITY

THERE IS A SOCIALLY ENFORCED HIERARCHY THAT SUGGESTS A CORRECT WAY TO BE TRANs. through an endless repertoire of social codes and sanctions, transnormativity EMPOWERS THOSE WHO occupy a narrow, restrictive Category of trans/gender while constraining those who do not.

THIS PIECE OF MY RESEARCH PROGRAM EXPLORES THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF TRANSNORMATIVITY ACROSS SOCIAL CONTEXTS & INSTITUTIONS.

TRANS STUDIES & TRANS SOCIOLOGY

Trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people exist in every community and should be accounted for in every social institution. Transgender studies has been historically housed within the humanities, and slow to include the work of social scientists.

My contributions to trans studies & trans Sociology are centered squarely within the empirical turn in Transgender studies, centered on an interdisciplinary and data-driven approach to understanding and improving the material realities and structural conditions of transgender life.
